Tiny Flying Dinosaurs

My name is Yan. I post photos that I take, which are of local bands a lot of the time. I tend to reblog a lot of things that make me laugh, and occasionaly I write a proper post about something.

Finally getting around to sorting through HWCH photos. Yes, it’s taken that long.

It’s that time of year again

Time to start looking through my photos and find five I want to submit to be part of the photography exhibition attached to the Hard Working Class Heroes music festival. I’ve been in it for the last two years, which is fucking awesome. This year they’ve brought in an international judging panel, so it would be even cooler if I got in.

I’m gonna get started on a short list here cause it’s also a good way to show off my favourite shots from the last year. Any ‘what are you thinking that one is terrible’ or ‘definitely submit that one’s would be highly appreciated.

A Silver Mount Zion:

Dirty Three

Josh T. Pearson

Neosupervital

Joe Lally(’s guitar player)

Gran Casino

Heathers

The Funeral Suits

Enemies

Jamie Ley(’s keyboard player)

Super Extra Bonus Party

Laura Stevenson

Yeh Deadlies

Enemies

As usual, this is a bit ridiculous for a ‘short’ list, but I’ll gradually pare it down.

Along similar lines, this is the photo that got into the Hard Working Class Heroes music festival’s photography exhibition two years ago. That was thrilling (I got in last year too, and that was a little less so: because I knew I’d done it before I was more scared that I wouldn’t again. Also they way they did it this year was less fun; they just projected them instead of printing them).
It’s a picture of Ichirou Agata, the guitarist of Melt-Banana, which is still the loudest and one of the best gigs I’ve been to.
It’s also (for one of my photos) heavily post-processed. I messed with the colours and contrast to try to get an eerie horror-ish effect - I didn’t actually upload it to the live music section of deviantart originally. I also saved it as a small file to upload it (I think my internet connection must have been worse back then). Which, it turned out, was incredibly stupid. It was too small for the exhibition; I had to go back and find the file again and try to recreate it. The one I sent in for printing was almost definitely slightly different to this - the reason I don’t post-process things much is because I’m incredibly bad at deciding which is better when you get down to tiny incremental differences in colour, contrast or whatever, and that also applies to deciding if two images are exactly the same.
Incidentally, of the five photos I submitted it’s not the one I would have chosen (although I do like it).
Oh, and it’s also worth mentioning that at that years’ HWCH I ran into Ferrau (http://thebookloversmusic.tumblr.com) for only the second time in real life, and ended up spending the whole night having ridiculous amounts of fun with him and the singer from Queen Kong (we also met for the first time at one of her gigs). If we weren’t properly real life friends by the end of that night, that happened a little later when I filled in on drums for a Booklovers gig.
First uploaded 21 June 2008 - so this one isn’t that old, but it’s an important one.
